Icons for Icons
.
.The recent big art story that MOCA will have an exhibit of Dennis Hopper's work, curated by Julian Schnabel should prove to be a very interesting start to Jeffrey Deitch's tenure there. And judging from what I've seen, Schnabel is the perfect choice.
If you've encountered a blank space, hearing the name Dennis Hopper, THIS will fill in the blanks quite nicely.

Cosmic Maps
.
.was the perfect title for Rebecca Horn's Show at Sean Kelly Gallery in the early summer of '08. It put your mind in the right mood to appreciate her large works on paper which are the perfect foil for her kinetic sculptural pieces. The image is from a review by the Brooklyn Rail, which gives detailed insight into her complicated oeuvre. The installation shots are quite tempting and you can view the individual pieces HERE. It seems that the paintings are an anomaly, though and that performance, sculpture and installation are her preferred means of expression. For more on that, visit her Website.

Daubism
.
.
.Pointillism by any other name . . . is still pointillism, but Dena Tollefson has decided to call hers daubism; I guess because she applies bigger portions of paint. You can read all about that in the Artist Statement and the last paragraph of Biography on her Website. What I can say for sure is that her take on this genre is authentic and very appealing.

Pointillist Effect
.
This lovely piece by Jane Logemann looks for all the world like abstract pointillism, but after some reexamination, she just might be employing a similar, reverse-pointillism techinique that Yayoi Kusama did in her infinity net paintings. There are only two other examples of her work on the Net and with no accompanying text, it's hard to figure out what she's doing.

Text Paintings
.
.
.Although this genre has been around for a while, I'm still pleasantly amazed when finding a great painting whose sole content is text. Erik den Breejen's oeuvre is about rock music and his execution ranges from silly and goofy to serious and competent. He's represented by Freight + Volume where you'll find lots of images and a short bio HERE gives insight into his work.
